York Teams Post Wins In Hall’s Sgt. York Invitational Tournament

The York Dragons and Dragonettes both posted big opening day wins in the Hall’s Sgt. York Invitational Tournament held at York Institute last week, with the girls crushing Stratford 75-27 and the boys taking  73-46 win over Moore County.

In the girls game, the Dragonettes jumped out to an 18-8 first period lead and never looked back, as they pulled away to a 44-14 halftime lead behind a 14-point effort by Haylee Johnson.

York continued to pull away in the third period, as  seven players got into the scoring column to take a commanding 67-21 lead into the final period, and coasted to the 75-27 win.

Haylee Johnson led the Dragonettes and took game-high scoring honors with 17 points, with Harli Smith and Carly Tipton adding 12 each, while Hannah Conatser had 11, Mikaela Reagan and Amelia Hull with 6 each, Lilly Conatser 5, Isabella Blevins 4, and Sage Smith 2 points.

Shetoria Russell led Stratford with 11 points, with Tamya Fizer adding 8, Mya Swanson 6, and LaModesty Fitts 2 points.

In boys’ action on Thursday, the Dragons took an early lead and never trailed, holding a 7-point advantage in the first period, 19-12, and pulling out to a 10-point lead at the half, 36-26.

The game continued to be rather close through the third period, as Moore County cut the lead to single digits going into the final frame, before Noah Smith led a 23-5 Dragon run with 10 fourth period points to win going away to post the 27-point win, 73-46.

In addition to Smith’s game-high 21 points, Roger Meadows added 20, Landrick Leffew 12 and Case Moody 10, with Cole Smith adding 4, Riley Cooper 3, Nicolas Smith 2, and Caleb Christianson 1 point.

A. Copeland led Moore County with 11 points, with C. Bateman adding 12, R. Helman 6, C. Smith 5, J. Fanning 4, G. Jennings and B. Fletcher 3 points each, and D. Scruggs 2 points.

In action on Friday, the Lady Dragons took on a very strong Class A Red Boiling Springs team, with the game going into overtime before the Red Boiling girls pulled out a 55-49 win.

The teams played to a 12-12 first period deadlock, but both teams went cold in the second period, with York only scoring 3 points, while Red Boiling managed 6 points to hold an 18-15 halftime lead.

Action picked up in the third period, with York closing the gap to one point, 31-32 going into the final period, with the teams ending regulation tied at 45-45.

However, York went cold again in the overtime period, only scoring 4 points, while Red Boiling continued to have a hot hand to post the 6-point win, 55-49.

Harli Smith led the York scoring with 20 points, while Haylee Johnson and Hannah Conatser added 9 each, Carly Tipton 8, Mikaela Reagan 2  points, and Isabella Blevins 1 point.
