Three Injured In Accident July 14 on Highway 127

A two-vehicle collision on Highway 127 in Clarkrange late Thursday afternoon, July 14 sent three persons to out-of town hospitals for treatment.

According to reports, the accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. near the intersection on the Martha Washington Road and Highway 127, involving a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Melanie Cook of Crossville, traveling north, and a 2005 Toyota, driven by Katie Whitehead of Knoxville, traveling south.

Reports indicated that Ms. Cook crossed the center line and struck the southbound Toyota, with both vehicles coming to rest in the roadway, causing traffic to have to be re-routed through the parking lot of Green Acres Real Estate on the east side and the parking lot of Andie’s Quick Mart on the west side.

Ms. Cook was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, while Miss Whitehead was transported by ambulance to Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville.

A passenger in the Cook vehicle, identified as Michael Bennett, was also transported by ambulance to Cumberland Medical Center and later transferred to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.

Charges are pending against Ms. Cook and Mr. Bennett, who were reportedly involved in a domestic situation at the time of the accident.

The accident was investigated by Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Marty Brown, assisted at the scene by Sgt. Jeff Cook, along with officers from the Fentress County Sheriff’s Department, Fentress County Ambulance Service, Rescue Squad, EMA, and the Clarkrange Fire Department
