School Board Approves Bids for Buses, and Roof Repairs, Honors CHS Robotics Teachers

By Jacob E. Rosenbaum

The Fentress County Board of Education opened 2020 with a productive meeting in which they accepted bids for a new roof at South Fentress Elementary School, and for the old gym at York Elementary, as well as for two new school buses. The Board also recognized two robotics instructors from Clarkrange High School for receiving a $2,500 grant for the program, as well as attending to other standard business including policy revisions, out of state trips, and recognition of the school system’s food service staff.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Eddie Cook, at which time the minutes from the December 2019 session were approved, and the Director’s report acknowledged.

Two sizable monetary matters were first on the agenda starting with the roofing bids for South Fentress Elementary, which included new gutters and drain spouts, and a new roof for the old gym at York Elementary. Following review, Karen Cooper made a motion that the Board accept the low bid from Turner Roofing Company for $545,500, with a contingency that they negotiate for a lower price on the gutters. The motion was seconded by Russ Stephens, and supported unanimously.

The next item was the consideration of the bids for two new buses. There were two bids, one from Central States (Blue Bird) for $93,489 per bus, and one from Mid-South Thomas for $91,464 per bus. Following some discussion, which included recommendations from the administration of the bus garage, a motion was made by Karen Cooper, and seconded by Bill Cody, to accept the bid from Central States for two Blue Bird buses. This also received the board’s unanimous support.
