Charles A. Crabtree

Charles A. Crabtree, 83, finished his journey and went home to be with his Lord, whom he served faithfully as a charter member and an Ordained Deacon of Mt. Olive Free Will Baptist Church for 54 years on Sunday morning, June 25, 2017 at the Community Hospital in Anderson following a brief illness.  He also served the church as a Song Leader, Chairman of the Trustees and adult Sunday School Teacher.  Devoted to his family whom he loved mightily, Charles also loved fishing, gardening and the Chicago Cubs.

He was born on February 28, 1934, in Armathwaite, Tennessee, the son of James Wesley and Nancy Ann (Terry) Crabtree.

Charles attended Armathwaite city schools and later married the love of his life, Norma (Ausmus) on April 3, 1954, in Armathwaite, and she survives.

Mr. Crabtree had worked in the cleaning room of Interstate Casting in Indianapolis for 10 years prior to his retirement in 1995. Before that, he had worked for Frank Foundry in Muncie for 31 years in the maintenance dept.   

Besides his wife of 63 years, Norma, he is survived by two daughters, Tamara Marie Sluss (husband-Mark), Marion and Elizabeth Ann Purcell (husband-Gary), Claksville, Tennessee; two sons, Wendell Crabtree (wife-Meleny), Indianapolis and Charles Brent Crabtree (wife-Angela), Muncie; eight       grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren;  one sister, Louise Morris, Muncie; several nieces and nephews; a whole host of friends.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Mata Jean Crabtree in 1957; one grandson, Shane Crabtree in 2012; his parents; three sisters, Ova Sheppard, Opal Beaty and Mary Hall; three brothers, Johnnie, Doc and Howard.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2017, 1:00 P.M. at the Mt. Olive Free Will Baptist Church 7500 N. Wheeling, Muncie, IN 47304, with Pastor James O. McCowan and Rev. James E. Sluss officiating.  Burial will follow at the Jones Cemetery.  Arrangements are being handled by the Parson Mortuary.

Friends may call at the Mt. Olive Free Will Baptist Church on Thursday, June 29, 2017, from 11:00 A.M. until service time.

Clara Belle Human

Clara Belle Human, age 79 of the Banner Springs Community passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Human is survived by grandchildren, Roger Vaughn, Tia Swift and husband, Jimmy; great-grandchildren, Seth Vaughn, Madison Vaughn and Desmond Swift; daughter-in-law, Ruth Human; brother, Frank Atkinson & wife, Brenda; sisters, Jewell Hall, Charlene Cook & husband, Cordell and  Marie Williams & husband, Hollis; sisters-in-law, Charlene Atkinson and Barbara Atkinson; special friend, Rhonda Thompson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Human was preceded in death by husband, Leo Human; parents, Charlie and Martha Atkinson; son, Jerry Human; brothers, Tony Atkinson, Hoot Atkinson and Johnny Atkinson; and sister, Myrtle Ramsey.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 21st, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mundy Funeral Home South Chapel in Clarkrange with Bro. Lonnie Cook officiating. Burial followed in the Spring Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers included Chucky Ramsey, Tim Thomspon, Jimmy Dale Cook, Brandon Human, Seth Vaughn, Hershell Human and Tommy G. Human.

Mundy Funeral Home of Clarkrange, Tennessee was in charge of the services.

Janet S. Sams

Janet S. Sams, age 63, of Somerset, Kentucky passed away on Wednesday June 21, 2017 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. Janet was of born on September 29, 1953 in Muncie, Indiana to the late Willard and Hattie Gibson Gunter.

Mrs. Sams was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed showing miniature horses and the pride of her life was her little dog “Rags”.

She is preceded in death by her parents; son, Jamie Graham; brother, Ronnie Gunter; sister, Jessie Franklin.

Janet leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband, Larry Sams; son, Michael Gregory (Robyn); stepdaughter, Sheri Damico (Cory) of Marietta, California; brother, Clinton Gunter (Susie) of Marlonton, West Virginia; sister, Kathy Gunter of Crossville, Tennessee; along with 12 grandchildren and a brother-in-law, Gerald Franklin of Somerset.

Visitation for Mrs. Sams was Saturday June 24, 2017 from 1-3 P.M. in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral services followed at 3 P.M. Brother Carson Atwood officiated. Interment was in the Scroggins Cemetery, Double Top Community, in Jamestown, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Janet Sams Memorial Fund.

Southern Oaks Funeral Home of Somerset, Kentucky was entrusted with her arrangements.

Benny Slaven

Benny Eugene Slaven, 68, of Soddy-Daisy passed away on Monday, June 19. 2017 at his home. Benny was a member of IBEW Local 175 where he worked out of for many electrical companies over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Caney and Dorlis Slaven; sister, Joyce Jackson; grandfather, Virgil Slaven.

Survivors include his son, Benny (Renee) Slaven II; daughter, Carlina (Steve)  Caldwell; grandchildren, Cody, Abigail, Jossalin and Caleb; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Raven and Austin.

Services were held at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 23, 2017 in the funeral home chapel. The family received friends from 11:00 AM until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Arrangements were by Legacy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Soddy-Daisy 843-2525.
