Leona Bumgarner, age 83, of Grimsley, passed away Friday, December 28, 2018 at U.T. Medical Center.

Mrs. Bumgarner is survived by four daughters, Sue Heidel, Sharon Whittenburg, Sheila Bumgarner and Becky Bumgarner; five sons, Michael Bumgarner and wife Brandy, Brent Bumgarner and wife Gina, Derek Bumgarner, Mark Bumgarner and Shawn Bumgarner and wife Rachel; sixteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, David Beaty and wife Gennie and Junior Beaty; two sisters, Ruby Briere and husband Jackie and Glenda Crouch; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends…


Pauline Reagan Burton, age 88, of Jamestown, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at Signature Healthcare of Fentress County.

Mrs. Burton is survived by two sons, Cleveland Cook and wife Helen Cook and Jim Cook; three daughters, Betty Garrett and husband Wayne, Barbara Stockton and husband Donnie, and Sandra Bailey and husband Alan; eleven grandchildren, Cindy Cook, Wayne Garrett Jr., Chasta Cook Young, Brian LaFluer, Christy Stockton, Steven “Tony” Reagan, Sarah Reagan, Kyla Reagan, Nathan Garrett, Joseph Garrett and Thomas Reagan; and seven great-grandchildren, Aidan, Bailey, Taylor, MaKaia, Siylus, Raylan and Dallas…


On Tuesday, January 1, 2019, Fred Thomas Oliver passed away at the age of 81, in Evans, Ga.

Mr. Oliver was born in 1937 in Lexington, KY. and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1956. He completed coursework in business management at Lexington Community College (KY) and horticulture and landscaping at the University of Arkansas.

He proudly served with the National Guard in Kentucky and in Arkansas for a total of 18 years, finishing with the rank of sergeant first class. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. The Commander of the Kentucky National Guard awarded Mr. Oliver the Kentucky Merit Ribbon.

In 1989, he retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington, KY., as a medical supply technician supervisor…


Eileen Powell, age 92, of Jamestown, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Powell is survived by two daughters, Martha Stockton and husband Gary and Susan Traughber and husband Darrell; son, Mitch Powell and wife Paula; five grandchildren, Meg Graves, Ross Graves, Sarah Bishop, Mitchell Powell and Chloe Powell; four great-grandchildren; and a host of dear friends…


Muncie-Clara E. Phelps, 95, passed away Wednesday morning, January 2, 2019, at her residence following an extended illness.  She was born on May 19, 1923 in Muncie, the daughter of Archie and Elizabeth (Herbert) Lynn.

Clara attended Muncie city schools and later married the love of her life, Charles S. Phelps Sr., on March 25, 1946 and he preceded her in death on December 11, 2011.  Mrs. Phelps owned and operated the Phelps Florations Flower Shop that specialized in artificial arrangement.  She enjoyed flowers of all types especially Sweet Heart Roses.  Clara was a member of the Northview Wesleyan Church.  Besides making floral arrangements, she enjoyed eating out and shopping.  Mostly, spending time with her family was especially treasured!..


Joe Collier Shelton, age 41, of Jamestown, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Shelton was born September 10, 1977 in Livingston, TN.  He was a general laborer in ceramics.

Mr. Shelton is survived by fiancée, Crystal Deaton; daughter, Maisen Isabella Brooke Shelton; son, Daison Beaty; mother, Linda Carol Turgeon and husband Robert; sister, Jenine Pierce and husband Gary; half brother, Chad Shelton; half sister, Carolyn Smith and husband Jeff; mother of his children, Melissa Tinch; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends…


Walter Vernon Tompkins, age 98, of the Mt. Helen Community, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Tompkins was born August 13, 1920 in Muncie, Indiana to Walter Oliver and Zadie (Ellis) Tompkins. He met the love of his life at Mt. Helen Baptist Church and married her on October 20th, 1940. Together they had one son, Jerry.

Walter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He was a true gentleman, strong in his faith and served his country with honor. He served in the United States Navy as a seaman first class from 1944-1946 in the Pacific and South China Sea on the USS PGM-II gun boat, mine sweeper squadron 12…
