THE IMPORTANCE OF POSTING YOUR 911 HOUSE NUMBER

The importance of having a visible address number on your home cannot be emphasized enough.  House number posting regulations have been in place since 1999, however not everyone has complied.

In an effort to serve you better during an emergency, the Fentress County E-911 is requesting that all residents cooperate in posting their street numbers on their homes or if more than 30 feet from the street, post next to your driveway.  The Fentress County E-911 advise, “When emergency personnel is called to a home for an emergency, time is always critical.  That means finding that residence as quickly as possible. Walk out to the street in front of your home and see if your house numbers can be easily seen.  If they can be, then there is a greater chance of a life being saved.”

The Fentress County E-911 offers these quidelines:

•            The numbers on residences should be at least 6 inches high and reflectorized.

•            Numbers must be posted on the side of the house facing the county road and free from obstruction.

•            If the home is more than 30 feet from the street, or cannot be seen from the street, numbers must be displayed on the mailbox or at the beginning of a driveway.

•            If multiple houses are located on a private drive, they must have a stake at the beginning of the drive with all house numbers posted on it, plus, there must be a stake or house number posted on each house on the private drive.

•            Remember – your mailman always comes the same way.  Ambulances, police cars and fire trucks may come from any direction.  Be sure to mark both sides of your mailbox or mark you house number in such a way that it may be easily seen, no matter which direction they are approaching.

At the very least, any house number is better than none at all.  Another concern to consider is that new emergency personnel employees and police officers may not be familiar with all of the streets or family names.  This is all the more reason to have a house number clearly posted by your front door.

The main concern of everyone is for the safety of the residents of Fentress County.  You never know when you may be the next one to call 911 for an emergency.  Be sure your house number is posted and visible from the road so you can be found as quickly as possible as every minute counts.
