Dragons to Host Cumberland County In Season Opener Friday, August 18

The York Football Dragons are anxious to get the season underway as they host Cumberland County in their season opener Friday, August 18 at the Dragon Pit.

Following two scrimmages and a Jamboree, Dragon head coach Derwin Wright said he was pleased with the progress his team had made  in the pre-season and felt the team was ready.

“We had a 3-way scrimmage a couple of weeks ago against Cookeville and Lebanon, and I thought our first defense did a great job — not allowing either of those teams to score, but we were a little disappointed with our offense in that scrimmage.

However, they came back and worked hard, and the second scrimmage against Whitwell ended in a 21-21 score, with both teams playing well on both sides of the ball.  We learned some really good lessons in that scrimmage and saw some areas where we needed to make adjustments, which we were able to do in the jamboree on Friday.

“I think going into game one, we have a lot of those issues worked out, and overall, I think we’re going to be in a pretty good position at this time to start working and getting ready for Cumberland County on Friday.

“We have depth in several positions,” Wright continued.  “It all starts with the quarterback and center, and we have Landrick Leffew, a junior, starting at quarterback and Zach Strong, a sophomore, at center.  We have some experience in the backfield with junior Cole Cooper at fullback, backed up by Dawson Threet, Ethan Probst, Heath Rexroat and EJ Johnson at wingback, along with Thomas Miller.  We have two good tight ends, Daderick Phillips and Josiah Headings, who both block well, Edward Stockton, a sophomore and Thomas Miller at tackle.  At right guard, we have our only senior on the line, Jarrett Reed, who does a good job, and Braden Wheeler, who has made a lot of progress this year at that position.

“We also have some depth at the receiver position, with Trevor Threet, Lathan Drake and Anthony Murdock alternating at the receiver positions, along with Jerry Murdock, who has good leaping ability and good hands.”

When asked about the defense, Coach Wright said:  “We have three very good linebackers with Josiah Headings at middle, and Landrick Leffew and Cole Cooper right and left.  We have Gilbert Gifford as backup at middle linebacker and Daderick Phillips and Will Helbig as backups in the other linebacker positions.  At nose guard we have Thomas Cooper and Braden Wheeler, and we have Dawson Threet and Ethan Probst at the defensive ends, and Johann West and AJ Johnson at the “Dog” linebacker positions, backed up by Peyton Voiles, Cameron Gibson and Cade Brannon.  The secondary will see Andrew Murdock and Heath Rexroat, along with Thomas Miller, Trevor Threet and Lathan Drake.  Senior Ethan Probst will return as our punter and kicker, and he will be backed up by Johann West, who is a very accurate place kicker.”
