Dragons Take 47-38 Victory Over Cannon Co. In District 8-AA Opener Fall to MCM in Quarterfinal Game

YAI_TNP4120The York Dragons opened the District 8-AA Basketball Tournament last week at Tennessee Tech gym in Cookeville with a big 47-38 win over Cannon County.

Damon Johnson led a 11-7 Dragon run in the first period with 5 points, and then Landrick Leffew picked up the pace in the second period with 8 points, as York pulled out to a 10 point advantage at the half, 24-14.

The Dragons went cold in the third period while  Cannon County’s Trey Fann got a hot hand, pumping in 8 points to help the Lions pull to within two points at 30-28 going into the final frame.

YAI_TNP3620York’s Gareth Moody, who had been held to 4 points through the first three periods of the contest, led the Dragons on a 17-10 run with 7 points to pull back out and cruise to the 9-point win.

Landrick Leffew led York with 13 points, with Gareth Moody adding 12, Luke Patton 10, Damon Johnson 7, Isaac Peavyhouse 4, and Case Moody 1 point.

Cannon County was led by Trey Fann with 16 points, with Brandon Miles adding 11, Charlie Parrish, Austin Duggin, and Anton Knox with 3 points each, and Cole George with 2 points.

With the win, York advanced to the quarterfinal round on Thursday against Murfreesboro Central Magnet, a team they had split with during the regular season, and battled MCM to a 26-26 tie before going cold in the third period and coming up on the short end of a 59-44 score to end their season.

The Dragons fell behind 4-0 early as Central Magnet’s Wes Duffield scored two baskets in YAI IMG_1464the first minute, but came back on three straight baskets, including a 3-pointer, by senior Gareth Moody, and took their first lead of the game at 10-9 with 2:50 to go in the opening period on a 3-pointer by Luke Patton.

Damon Johnson’s basket with just under a minute left in the period gave York a 3-point lead at 13-10, but MCM responded with two late baskets, including a 3-pointer from midcourt by Patrick Blair at the buzzer to give MCM a 15-13 lead.

York responded to open the second period with a 7-point run a basket by Gareth Moody and two buckets by Isaac Peavyhouse, including a 3-pointer, to go up 20-15 before Central Magnet battled back  to tie the score at the half at 26-26.

The Dragons came out flat to open the third period, and couldn’t get anything to fall, while Central Magnet went on a 16-0 run to pull out to a 42-26 lead, before Damon Johnson broke the scoring ice for York with two free throws with 2:40 left in the period.  Gareth Moody added a basket with just over a minute left, but the Dragons found themselves down 14 points going into the final period trailing 44-30.

This would be as close as the Dragons would get, as MCM pulled out to a 21-point lead at 59-38 before late 3-point baskets by Roger Meadows and William Cook cut the lead back to the final margin of 15 at 59-44.

Gareth Moody led the Dragon scoring with 15 points, followed by Damon Johnson with 7, Luke Patton 6, Isaac Peavyhouse and Landrick Leffew with 5 each, and Roger Meadows and William Cook with 3 points ech.
