Dragons Shut Out Coalfield 21-0; Host Grundy County This Week

The York Football Dragons traveled to Coalfield on Friday, August 24 and took an impressive 21-0 win over a solid Class A Yellow Jacket team to remain undefeated in their first two games.

As in their first game in their 41-0 win over Cumberland County, the Dragons utilized a strong running game and solid defensive effort to post the win, as they rolled up 279 rushing yards while holding the Yellow Jackets to only 97 yards on the ground.

After a scoreless first period,  which saw neither team being able to put together a sustained drive, the Dragons got on the scoreboard with 9:31 left in the second period, when Cole Cooper took it in from 2 yards out, with Johann West booting the conversion to give York a 7-0 lead.

The big play on this drive was a 21-yard pass completion from Landrick Leffew to Josiah Heddings, York’s only  pass completion of the night, and an 11-yard gain by Thomas Miller to give the Dragons a first and goal at the Yellow Jacket 4.

York opened the third period with an 8-play, 53-yard drive, which took over 4 minutes off the clock.  This drive was capped by a 19-yard run by Landrick Leffew, with West again booting the conversion to put the Dragons on top 14-0 with 7:49 left to play in the period.

York would add another score in the final period, which came on a 2-yard run by Leffew to cap a 7-play, 76 yard drive, with West again booting the conversion.

The big plays in this drive included a 37-yard run by Thomas Miller and one of 25 yards by Leffew.

Thomas Miller paced the Dragons on offense with 103 yards on 9 carries, Cole Cooper added 50 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and Josiah Heddings picked up 46 yards on 9 carries.

Landrick Leffew scored two touchdowns and gained 44 net yards on 10 carries, while Cade Brannon and Ben Cooper added 11 and 6 yards respectively.

Leffew also completed one of three passes for 21 yards in the contest.

For Coalfield, quarterback Lance Byrd led the offense, completing 8 of 18 passes for 82 yards.

On the defensive side of the ledger, Landrick Leffew led the team in tackles with 8 solo tackles and 3 assists, with Cole Cooper adding 7 tackles and 2 assists, and Ben Cooper 4 tackles and 2 assists.

Seth Lowe led the Coalfield defense with 9 tackles and 2 assists, while Jonathan Woodward had 8 tackles and 3 assists.

Dragon head coach Derwin Wright said that he was overall pleased with his team’s performance in the first two games, which has seen the offense roll up 61 points while the defense held both Cumberland County and Coalfield scoreless.

“Our defense is playing well, and so far, as far as the running game and being physical, our offense is looking good,” he said.

“Against Coalfield, we kept shooting ourselves in the foot by making dumb penalties and not making our blocks in the first half, but we talked about it at the half and made some adjustments and settled down and played better in the second half.

“Thomas Miller had a breakout game, and both he and Cole Cooper are getting better at seeing the holes and making the cuts.  Ben Cooper is also coming along well and  Josiah Heddings is coming back from an injury and is now playing on both sides of the ball and is improving each game.’Our special teams are doing a good job.  While we need to work on our return game, we’re overall pleased with the kicking game.”

When asked what to expect from Grundy County this week, Coach Wright said:  “Grundy County has a lot of talent and a strong passing game, and will be showing us a new look, which will be the first real test of our pass defense.

We just need to keep doing what we’ve done the first two games.  Every game is important, but this first home game is very important, so we need to have the stands full.  This is the only home game we’ll have for the next 4 weeks, so it’s very important that we make it count.”

Grundy County will come to the Dragon Pit with a 1-1 record, as they opened the season with a 21-14 win over East Hickman before losing last week to Ezell Harding by a 33-14 score.
