Dragons Fall to Smith Co. 34-12

The York Football Dragons hosted one of their oldest rivals, the Smith County Owls on Friday, September 20, and for three quarters, battled the visitors to a 7-6 score.

However, in the fourth period, the Owls were able to put four touchdowns on the board, including an 85-yard kickoff return, to pull away and post a 34-12 win over the Dragons.

The game started out as a defensive duel, with York going 3 and out on their first possession, and then Smith County picking up a couple of first downs before having to punt back to the Dragons.

York began play on this possession at their 44 and moved all the way down to the Smith County 14 before being stopped on a 4th and 3 situation.

The teams continued to battle back and forth, but neither threatened through the remainder of the first half.

On the opening kickoff of the second half, the Dragon defense stopped Smith County’s Zeke Dillon for a loss on the return at the Owl 2 yard line.  Two carries later, with the Owls facing a 3rd and 6 situation at their own 6 yard line, Cameron Spivey connected with Eli Martin for a 94-yard touchdown, and Bo Broyles booted the conversion t0 give the Owls a 7-0 lead with only 1:25 gone in the third period.

York took the ensuing kickoff and put together the longest sustained drive of the night, grinding out the yardage with short rushes to move to the Owl 28, before Nathaniel Castellon broke free for the Dragons’ first score, to pull to within 1 when Caden Stover’s kick failed.
