Dragons Crush Wartburg In Big Homecoming Game Win

The York Institute Dragons capped off a great homecoming week by rolling over the Wartburg Central Bulldogs 58-0.

The Dragons elected to kick off to start the game, and held the Bulldogs to just 6 yards on their first possession, forcing a punt and taking possession at the York 48.

From that point on, it was all York, as they scored on every possession of the the first half, to build up a 44-0 halftime advantage, which allowed the reserves to get a lot of playing time in the second half.

On the Dragons’ first possession,  Thomas Miller ran the ball 37 yards to the Wartburg 15 for a first down and  Cole Cooper carried the ball for 11 yards for a first and goal, with Cooper taking it in on only the third play of the drive, and

Johann West added the PAT giving the Dragons a 7-0 lead with less than 4 minutes gone off the clock.

The Bulldogs moved the ball near midfield on their next possession, picking up a first of only seven first downs in the contest, until they were forced to punt, with York taking possession at their own 15.

Miller ripped off a 50 yard run to the Wartburg 35.  Landrick Leffew ran the ball for 13 to the 22.  Miller ran for another 13 yards and after a 5 yard penalty by Wartburg, the Dragons had a 1st and goal at the Bulldog 4.  Cole Cooper ran it in for his second TD and West added the PAT to make it 14-0.

The next Warburg possession ended in a safety as Josiah Heddings sacked JoshMoore in the end zone.  Wartburg then had a free kick from their 20 yard line that was returned by Miller to the Wartburg 48 yard line.  Ben Cooper ran the ball for 11 yards, and then after an incomplete pass, Cole Cooper raced 37 yard for his 3rd TD of the game.  West made the PAT and York led 23-0.

On the first play of the next drive for the Bulldogs, Josh Moore threw a pass that was picked off by Miller and returned for 21 yards to the York 45.  Cole Cooper accounted for all the offense on this Dragon drive as he ran twice for 55 yards and his 4th TD in the 1st quarter of the game.  The PAT was good by West, giving York a 30-0 lead.

The Bulldogs moved the ball on the next drive up to their 47 yard line, but then the Dragons forced a fumble that was recovered by Lathan Drake at the Dragon 48.  After an incomplete pass by the Dragons, Josiah Heddings scored the Dragons 5th TD of the half with a 52 yard run, West’s kick was good, and the Dragons lead 37-0 with 10:57 in the half.

Wartburg’s next drive ended in an interception by West that gave York the ball on the Warburg 37.  The Dragons moved the ball down to the Bulldog 29 yard line, then Johann West finished off the drive he started with a 29 yard run.  He also added the extra point giving York a 44-0 lead that they took into halftime.

With a running clock in the 2nd half the Dragons added two more score, a 5 yard run by Lathan Drake in the 3rd quarter and a 57 yard run by freshman QB Dalton Barger in the 4th.

The Dragons dominated the game on both sides of the ball racking up 496 in total offense while giving up only 61 yards.

Following the game, a very pleased Coach Derwin Wright commented:  “We had one of the best weeks of practice we have had this year, and we played tonight like we had been practicing.  Hopefully, that’s a lesson learned and they’re going to come out each week ready to play.”  “Wartburg has a good quarterback and we knew that we had to put some pressure on him and make him scramble, and we did a good job of doing that.  It was just a good overall team effort.

It was also good to see some of our young players be able to step up and make some big plays in the second half, and overall, it was just a big win for us.  It was great to see the kids come out and play at this level after coming off a disappointing loss last week at Upperman in a game which I didn’t think we played up to our potential.
